Generative AI is today’s technology with its influence in redefining future modules of practicality.

Starting from business to normal life, Generative AI has proved much potential to curve an addictive transformation. With no surprise, even education will be colonized by LLM (Large Language Model) and Generative AI.

The previous four digital revolutions had a sweeping modification to technology and ways of living. However, this Generative AI has posed a serious concern to the education sector. As per the Assistant Director-General for Education UNESCO, Stefania Giannini,

AI is forcing us to ask questions about the ‘known-world’ that we usually take as a starting point for education. Many of our old assumptions and norms, especially those concerning knowledge and learning, appear unlikely to sustain the ‘weight’ of this new technology.

As stated earlier about the past four digital revolutions, the advent of social media has been the most addictive transformations of all. Spending hours on scrolling through the contents of YouTube or Facebook, social media has proved to be much addictive to Gen Z. Later with the gradual introduction to AI, social media applications were enhanced to provide more intuitive user experiences.

Now as OpenAI has launched their first ChatGPT model on November, 2022, the outlook of Generative AI has fully transformed to provide advanced RPA (Robotic Process Automation) facilities. Almost in every fields, Generative AI is gradually trained to process outputs with higher accuracy.

The introduction to this advancement comes with more future complexities surrounding its role, concerns about ethical use and acceptability among various countries. UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) has raised concerns on regulating Generative AI in schools as this could prove harmful in the upbringing of students. As stated by the UNESCO Director-General, Audrey Azoulay,

Generative AI can be a tremendous opportunity for human development, but it can also cause harm and prejudice. It cannot be integrated into education without public engagement, and the necessary safeguards and regulations from governments. This UNESCO Guidance will help policymakers and teachers best navigate the potential of AI for the primary interest of learners.

IMPACT OF GENERATIVE AI ON EDUCATION

AI is created by training datasets through various data sources and Generative AI uses the most advanced model of Transformers to process accurate outputs.

With no doubt, such technology has immense potential to increase productivity. Especially, it can be utilized by the school management to review tasks given to the students, like correcting answers and accurate markings with no biasness. Generative AI can even be customized to automate administrative tasks and create routines for better learning solutions.

Apart from the assistance in administrative tasks and increasing the productivity of teachers, it can allow diverse access of quality education resources to remote or underserved regions.

However, there lies substantial risks on the integration of Generative AI to education. As mentioned by UNESCO Director for the Future of Learning and Innovation, Sobhi Tawil,

Without institutional guidance of any sort, these technologies are likely to get welded into education systems in unplanned ways with uncertain implications and possible unintended consequences.

Without a pointed guidance, Generative AI can have serious impacts on education, mainly among the students. Concerns arises as students may misuse AI to cheat their home or school tasks.

Day-by-day more and more advanced Generative AI tools are getting developed to address daily life problems. It is now getting even harder to detect plagiarism as AI does the task of ensuring contents are freshly modified. It depends upon the true understanding of teachers and parents to encourage learning things more practically than mugging up and be limited to regular text books.

Proper guidance and regulations are required for a more personalized learning experience by leveraging Generative AI.
